10,000 kms Vancouver to Inuvik and back

Hi welcome to the trip. I left Vancouver July 10. about 1 1/2 months later than I planned. Thats ok because the Yukon wasn't going any where. The late start was do to my Landcruiser coming so later in from Japan, Then the fuel Pump was leaking. Took me 15 hours to get it out and get it rebuilt and 4 1/2 to put it back in. I got the truck all Canada certifide and was on the road, Wow I made it to the Hope slide and the thing over heated. I did what I could and got the Cruiser to Penticton. Hug out with Trina and Joel for a few days, fix his old VW van so he could go cruising. I though I may have got my cruiser up and running but had some more over heating problems again. Stop at John and Kim's in Kelowna. Helped them out with a little roofing, silly me I got laughing at Kim and almost fell of the roof. I got a pretty sore knee out of it. The next day I went to a raditor shop and had the rad cleaned. Then started for Williams Lake to visit Adrian and Doris. Guess what, over heated in Vernon, I was worring the worst a head gasket, or cracked head. I stopped in at a guy in Armstrong who brings a lot of auto's from Japan. He figured the head too. So he sold me a head, gasket, valve grind kit, bolts for $1850.00 wow now he sent to the specialist out in Marbel Lake and for another $1000 he would put it all on. So for the next 3 days I will be in Lumby.
Well I finally left Lumby and truck seems to be fine, Slept in the truck near 100 Mile House. Checked into Emergence to get my knee checked out almost a week and still feels broken. Exray department was closed for the weekend so on I went to Williams Lake to see Adrian and Doris. I stayed the weekend and had some good eaten and laughs, also stuck a new temperature gauge in the truck. Now I was off to Hudsons Hope where I camped along the river, real nice spot. (700 kms)
Off in the morning through Fort Nelson and up to Liard Hot springs. Beautiful hot pools. Camped down by the river and went for another quick dip in the morning before leaving. ( 700 kms) Now up through Watson Lake, some awesome mountains and lots of wildlife bears, Buffalo, Big Horn Sheep and Caribou. I left the Alaska hyw and took hyw 4 north of Watson Lake it ends up on Klondike hyw north off White Horse. 700kms of mostly 1 lane gravel, but it’s called a hyw. Hyw 4 was beautifull but the only city along the way Faro for gas had it’s gas station burn down a year ago. Good thing the city hands out a voucher for 20 liters of emergence gas, That gets you to the Klondike hyw at Carmel. There were only the odd truck passing maybe 1 every 2 hours or more and guess what I stopped to check out an old trappers cabin and when I got back to my truck the battery had died. Lucky me someone came the only one in the next 11 hours. He jumped me, I did have cables with me. The next day I drove into Dawson city, The Klondike hyw didn’t have much to see. Dawson city and area was pretty cool. I hung around most of the day and then headed up the dempster hyw to Inuvik. (600kms)
The Dempster Hyw is an other story. It’s beautiful, interesting and vast almost beyond your imagination . All kinds of weather can happen from heavy rain, bad fog, sun, wind and still cold for July 27, I was watching for snow the weather was cold rainy windy when I was near the Yukon Northwest Territory border. 1500 kms to Inuvik from Dawson city and back all gravel or mud should I say.As the pictures will show. If you add that to the 700 kms on hyw 4 that’s like driving from Vancouver to Los angles Ca. Inuvik is as far as you can drive north in Canada, it’s 200 kms passed the Artic circle, Ya it’s light 24 hours a day. At about 12;30 am the sun is setting and if you look back at 3;00 am the sun is already coming up it was dusk for a couple of hours that’s strange. When you go to bed it’s light and you sleep for awhile you think it’s morning and it’s still 4 am. Lots of work in Inuvik, I had an offer but didn’t want to work that bad, Even though he said the money is very very good.
After the Dempster Hyw I headed north west over the Top of the world Hyw to Tok Alaska. It real makes you feel like you are on top of the world, the Hyw follows the ridge top for 120 kms , you can see for miles. There is a little border crossing on top of th mountains, it’s only open in the summer months, to much snow up there. I don’t like being in the US so I’m heading south on the Alaska Hyw for White horse. Here the Canadian border guy was a dick he emptied my truck out and said looks ok now you can put it back in and I could go when I’m done, Then he forgot to give me my passport back. I remembered as I was leaving. He said good thing you remembered.
White Horse is pretty big maybe 30,000 has walmart, Canadian tire, super store.
From White Horse I’m heading down The 37 Stewart Cassiar Hyw. Lots of beautiful clear lakes and rivers.
I have done this part of northern BC a few times already so I didn't make to may pictures or notes, I made my way back through Williams Lake and stayed with my brother a night. We decided to visit a friend at Rail Lake for a night. We made a good dint into 2 flats of beer and a half bottle of Tequila. Caught a few fish of the dock at 1;00 am in the morning, then decided to quite that before I fell into the lake. The next morning I headed to Penticton again. To see if the boys would talk me into going to Shambhala Music Fest. "They did" . I am glad they did we had a absolute blast. 4 days of fun. That’s all I can say about that. "What happens in Shambhala stays in Shambhala". HaHA Till next year. I had a very good trip. I am glad to share it with you, Here is a slide show. The pic's only show for 3 seconds so if you want to take a better look at any of the pic's just hit the pause button. It's 10 minutes long so grab a coffee and enjoy.
Bye and thanks to everyone who made my trip so fun. Until we travel again. All the best.
Cheers
Rob
